Where your journey begins........

Mykonos

Mykonos Island

It is said that the island was named after the local hero Mykons, who was worshipped in antiquity and was considered to be a son or a grandson of the god Apollo. The island’s principal town is Mykonos town, also called “Chora”. Chora actually means “town’ in Greek and the Greeks always call a town Chora when the island happens to give its name to its principal town as well.

Chora

Mykonos town -or Chora- is the capital town of Mykonos island where one can find the most important sightseeing spots, the most commercial streets and shops, the most popular bars and restaurants. Chora’s architecture is typical of Cyclades, all white-washed cubic houses with blue windows, charming narrow streets with pebble-stoned pavements and little white chapels with sky-blue cupolas. A walk through Chora, the old port, Little Venice and the Castle, will put in your way the most significant places to visit in Mykonos and will allow you to take the most characteristic Mykonos polaroids!

Mykonos Windmills, with their distinctive form and white figure, have been a landmark of the island since the 16th century. Due to the strong winds that have always been present in the region, as well as the privileged geographic position of the island as a trade crossroad,

Archaeological museum

The Museum is open every day from 8:30 a.m to 3:00 p.m, except Mondays and on major public holidays.

The Archaeological museum of Mykonos is located in Mykonos town next to the harbour and is home to marble sculptures, ceramics, jewels and utensils, all findings from the excavations in Delos, Rhinia and Mykonos itself. Built in 1900, the museum was initially destined to house the findings from the excavation of the “purification pit” in Delos dating from the 5th century and the necropolis of Rhinia. In the winter of 426/425 b.c, the Athenias decided to “purify” the island of Delos.

Little Venice

(Alefkantra)

Between Kastro and Skarpa, on the east side of Mykonos harbour, there lies one of the most picturesque places in Greece. Alefkantra, also known as Little Venice, was built around the mid 18th century as a neighbourhood for rich merchants, sailing captains and boat owners. During pirate raids, very popular at the time, Little Venice was used for sailors to quickly load and unload goods onto the boats, and the narrow streets were made with a maze-logic in order to confuse the pirates that managed to set foot on the island!

With a very characteristic architecture, wooden balconies that hang over the waves, colourful walls and a very privileged view of the sun setting on the sea, Little Venice has inspired over the years countless romances and works of art, as no soul can resist the beauty of this scenery. Some of the old houses are now bars, tavernas and clubs, where visitors can enjoy the sunset sipping on their favourite cocktail, and a few remain as private residences.

Mykonos

Well what can I say about the Island of Mykonos and the beautiful Hotel Dorian ......in a word fabulous.

Dorian_boutique_Hotel_Mykonos

Dorian is a stylish boutique Hotel situated above the beach of Ornos a few miles from Mykonos Town, easily reachable by regular bus service or taxi. It is also just a short taxi ride from the airport.

On arrival we were taken from the stylish reception lounge area, decorated in cool colours, with pale blue sofas, to our rooms in the grounds of the Hotel , this had a terrace which opened up onto a small pool and had a view of the bay below. Beautiful.

After a comfortable nights sleep we walked across to the dining room, within the Hotel complex, and adjacent to a larger pool. The dining room was again beautifully furnished , there was an excellent Buffet breakfast, hot or cold. .

From the hotel it is a short walk along footpaths to the sandy beach of Ornos , sun loungers, umbrellas , are available and the sea is gently shelving perfect for swimmers or non swimmers. There are plentiful restaurants/ cafes along the shore. As the sun sets , the candles are lit in the stylish restaurants along the beach ,and you are welcomed with excellent food and good music, ... A nice alternative to Mykonos Town.

Mykonos Town

Mykonos Town is a short bus ride away,( there is a bus stop two minutes from the Hotel. ) Well worth a visit both during the day and in the Evening. During the day you can follow the narrow maze of cobbled streets finding a host of speciality shops and cafes, a photographers dream. In the evening the atmosphere changes, the sophisticated pricey nightlife is hectic, stimulated by Mykonos's former reputation as the gay resort of the Mediterranean , there are a myriad of stylish bars, with music, live cabaret performances or classical sounds, something to suit everyone. Would recommend you start the night at Little Venice , great place to watch the sunset ,possibly at the Piano Bar,(cabaret acts, gay friendly and great atmosphere).

Mykonos Island

We would recommend you hire a car for a couple of days ,to explore this beautiful island and beaches, you could start with Platys Yialos beach 4 km south of town, one of the longest established resorts. Psarou just to the west though is much prettier, 150ms of white sand , the elegant fish restaurant N'Ammos on the waterfront is popular with Athenians.

If you favour a loud beach bar head for Paranga.

Next is the golden crescent of Paradise Beach , this can get extremely busy with party goers,as the club Cavo Paradiso is at the far end of the beach. The next bay is Super Paradise , one of the liveliest beaches on Mykonos , with two bars pumping out summer hits.

The last beach we ventured to was Elia ,a very attractive beach with plenty of parking and a mountainous backdrop. This beach is exclusively gay later in the season, with nudity at the far end. Chill out music is played at the smart Elia Pool Bar Restaurant.
